The summer usually offers the ideal weather to get on top of your gardening jobs, but it can be hard to maintain weeding, pruning and mowing when you may be busy with the kids, going on holiday, or enjoying summer festivals.
However, if you’re free this coming Bank Holiday weekend (August 26th to August 28th), you might want to take advantage of the extra day to do some gardening chores you haven’t got round to yet.
Lawns
Thanks to the wet weather we’ve had over the summer, lawns shouldn’t have dried out or become damaged.
However, if you haven’t been able to mow them as frequently as you would have liked, as a result of the heavens regularly opening, this weekend could be your chance for a trim.
It is wise to attend to bald patches in the lawn, if there are any, and repair broken edges.
You might also want to use a petrol hedge trimmer to keep bushes looking neat and tidy before the colder months begin.
Prune summer fruits
To avoid your garden filling with falling fruit, make sure you collect any that are due to drop. Blackberries will be out in full force soon, while apples and raspberries may also be ready to pick.
These would make a delicious crumble if you want to treat the family over the bank holiday too.
Deadhead flowers
You might not have been able to enjoy spending time looking at your beautiful blooms as much as you had wanted to this summer, but it is approaching the time to deadhead your flowers now.
The Royal Horticultural Society recommends gardeners “remove spent flowers as soon as they look scruffy”.
To do this, pinch off the heads with your finger and thumb.
