A lawnmower is one of the most significant purchases you will make for your garden, more so than other garden machines.
Because of this, most people will treat a purchase as a serious investment and look into the different factors that make a range of machines that all do the same job so differently.
Before you buy, particularly if you are buying a heavy-duty machine or one that is used, here are some red flags to check as they could signify problems further down the line aside from
unrealistic pricing, poor reviews and reputation problems.
Rough Start
This will affect electric and petrol lawnmowers differently, but both types should start smoothly and you should be ready to mow in a matter of seconds after pulling the ripcord or turning on the power.
Inconsistent starts can be caused by a variety of issues but most of them revolve around the motor, and if it takes multiple attempts to get it started or it sounds like it is struggling, that can be a sign of a malfunction.
White Smoke
If you are using a petrol-powered mower, black smoke will sometimes be visible although it can be a problem if you have not noticed it before, due to the nature of the engine the mower uses.
However, white smoke is far more of a concern, and is commonly a sign of contamination, usually as a result of a coolant or oil leak. This usually is the time when you need to take your lawnmower to a professional to get fixed.
Strange Noises And Feelings
When you first use your lawnmower, you get used to how it feels and how it will respond whilst you are mowing your garden, so the best telltale sign of a problem is if something changes.
A vibrating engine or motor can be a sign of a broken blade, a screeching noise can suggest an internal issue or a lack of oil, and ratting is often a sign of a broken or loose component
